Submissions — Gi

A closer look at submissions in the gi at Knots & Collar, Defence Colony, New Delhi, India. A submission is how a round of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ends: a controlled joint-lock or choke that a training partner acknowledges with a tap, at which point everyone resets — safely, and with no one hurt. In the gi, the collar and sleeves open up finishes that do not exist in no-gi, and learning them properly means learning the control that comes first: you earn the position before you look for the finish. These photographs are from ordinary supervised classes, taught under a verified De La Riva black-belt lineage by Professor Binish Sukhija. As with everything here, the idea that governs the room is kindness over toughness — submissions are trained with care, so partners look after one another and come back to train again.
