Jiu-Jitsu Needs No Language: Parts 1 and 2
Two videos, one session, no sound.
We filmed a full Sunday session at Knots & Collar in New Delhi and got it back with no sound at all. The camera recorded nothing. We only found out afterwards.
We could have thrown the footage away. We kept it and set it to music, and it became a two-part series.
Jiu-jitsu needs no language.
Nobody in these videos is explaining anything. You don’t need a voice to see a grip being broken, a guard being passed or someone taking the back. Part 1 is the whole session. Part 2 is about one position: the turtle, and the fight to take the back from it.
Both are below. Put one on while you stretch, or watch them back to back.
Part 1: Sunday Session (28 minutes)
Part 1 is one full session, start to finish, cut down to 28 minutes. Nothing is reordered. You see it the way it happened.
It starts standing up. Pairs face each other and fight for collar and sleeve grips, and that takes up more of the session than people expect. Then the trips start landing and the room goes to the ground in ones and twos. From there you get guards being opened, pressure, chokes and scrambles back to the knees.

We also left in the parts nobody usually films: people sitting out a round against the wall, a belt being retied, two partners talking over what just happened. White belts, blue belts, the kids and the coaches are all in it. Nobody was placed for the camera.

It runs in twelve chapters, each with its own track, so it moves the way a session moves.
Part 2: Turtle and Back Takes (12 minutes)
Part 2 comes from the same mat on the same day, and it turned out to be about one thing: back takes.
Someone turtles and someone else goes hunting. A hand fishes for the far armpit, a knee wedges in behind, the seatbelt goes on. Then comes the part everyone has to learn: the slow fight for the second hook while the person underneath tries to get their hips back to the mat.
Some get the back. Some get rolled. A few end up somewhere nobody planned, which is what rolling looks like when nothing is set up for the camera.

It’s not a tutorial. There’s no breakdown and no slow-motion replay. It shows what the position looks like when both people are really trying. It runs in six chapters, each with its own track.
Who these are for
- Thinking about starting? Part 1 shows exactly what you’d walk into on a Sunday at our gym.
- Keep losing the back once you get there? Watch Part 2 for the second hook.
- Keep getting turtled? Part 2 shows what the other person is trying to do to you.
- Already training? Put either one on in the background and let it get you back on the mat.
