Gi Jiu-Jitsu

These are photographs from our gi classes at Knots & Collar, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu studio in Defence Colony, New Delhi, India. The gi — the traditional kimono and belt — is where most people begin. The jacket, collar and sleeves give both partners something to hold, which slows the game down and makes it a puzzle of grips, angles and leverage rather than speed or strength. That is exactly why it suits everybody: children from age three, complete beginners, and older members starting in their thirties, forties and beyond all train in the same room. You will see white belts drilling a single movement until it becomes natural, coloured belts working combinations, and everyone rolling at the end under supervision. Every class here is led under a verified De La Riva black-belt lineage by Professor Binish Sukhija, so the detail you are taught can actually be checked. We train gi seven days a week, morning and evening, and the belt you see on the mat is real data — earned on the mat, never bought. The photographs are unstaged: ordinary classes, ordinary evenings, the people who train here week in and week out.
