Worm guard

Worm guard looks complex and is simple underneath: the lapel, wrapped under your foot, gives you back the shoulder control a sleeve would. From half a worm guard, a sit-up that becomes a sweep, a pass or the back.

Survival

Why the sleeve, why the lapel

The sleeve gives you their shoulder and lat. When they will not give it, the lapel replaces it. Pass it under your foot once, then again, until your foot is wrapped in a new sleeve.

Transitions

Half a worm guard

Feet on the hips, pull the grip, that foot comes out and pummels over to under. Other foot around and in, hand on the heel. It is 50-50, and it is how we start.

Half a Worm Guard
Gi — Worm Guard: Half a Worm Guard, the Sit-Up and the Back

Kick, drop, sit up

Kick, and drop the other foot to the mat so you are not crunched. Sit up, hand the grip over, look towards their back, hand over again, and get up.

Forearm clears the knee

From the top, use your forearm to pass their knee. First time, let the grip go and simply mount.

Run away from the head, take the back

Go sideways, away from their head, capture the top foot, knee on the mat, roll onto the shoulder. Let go only when you have proper back control.

Knee into the knee pit

Too heavy to sit up? Hip escape, dive in, fall back, kick up and use your forearm to push their knee into your knee pit. That foot is now a back hook.

Do not drop the foot

Dropping makes the sit-up easy and leaves nothing to stop a step over. Keep the inner thigh active, kick, hip up, onto the shoulder.

Half a Worm Guard

Head to the back before the hips fall

On the shoulder, one foot to the far thigh, the other under: X-guard control. Move your head towards their back before your hips fall, so the grip can shift.

Grip over the thigh

Take the grip over your thigh, from the centre, so your shoulders stay free. With your hand below your own feet, your own weight wastes it.

Half a Worm Guard

Make them sit, dive in, kick in a circle

Knees to the chest, make them sit sideways, dive in, then kick forward and in a circle. Keep your legs crossed: one foot is already a hook and the other becomes one.
