X-guard
Getting under someone from an angle: take the side, move away, intercept the foot and fall. Then a sweep if you are in time, half a get-up if you are late, and the back if the get-up will not come.
Survival
Sideways, not in line
Start at an angle, so they have to turn towards you before they can fight. In line, they can charge forward or take an immediate mount.
The second foot goes under
The second foot goes under, not over. Over, and you have given up the guard: they have side control easily.

Transitions
Move away, intercept
Move away as if going towards their back. They reset, you catch the foot, fall onto the shoulder, kick up and pull it into your armpit.
If the push fails, pull
When they will not move, pull instead. Head close, under the knee, their shin near your ear, fall sideways with your shin forward.
Fight the supporting limb
Do not fight the leg they are already fighting with. Go to the other foot and you kill the support.
Swim in, or deep half
Their foot outside, swim in. Their foot inside, you cannot dive in easily, so think of deep half.
Catch them in the air
Heavy on one side? Fall and kick the free foot up before it posts, your other foot swinging in a semi-circle. It is a timing sweep: late, and it has gone.
Half a get-up
They have posted. One foot pushes, the other posts on the mat, kick, sit up on your palm, half a get-up and run into them. The full one is heavy on the neck.
Pass the foot over, take the back
Get-up will not come? Pass the foot over, hook, second hook, knees to the chest, hold the pocket, kick, shoulder walk, hooks in.
